Will Smith’s Top 10 Rules for Success

He’s an actor, rapper, producer, and songwriter.

Newsweek called him “the most powerful actor in Hollywood” and according to Forbes, is the most bankable star worldwide.

He’s worth over $250 million.

He’s Will Smith and here are…

The Top 10 Rules for Success from Will Smith

1. Don’t listen to the #littleman.

Don’t let other people dictate your life decisions. When other people see you doing something they don’t approve of, or they can’t do themselves, they may prevent you from doing it yourself. Don’t listen to the negativity and discouragement. Drown out any influences that are pulling you away from your ultimate goals and dreams. Whether or not you succeed is up to you. Once you decide to listen to the still, small voice inside yourself that you know is right, then you must do your best to follow through with your course of action, and prove everybody wrong. The best way to do this is to succeed.

2. Where you are isn’t where you’re going to be.

“It isn’t where you came from, its where you’re going that counts.” Ella Fitzgerald

Avoid getting stuck in the narrow focus of your situation and circumstances. You could have it harder than many people do, but as Gary Vaynerchuk once said, you don’t have it as bad as the person who is “in last place.” Remember that today is only temporary, and a new day is just around the corner. Choose today to focus on the compelling future that you have ahead of you.

3. Make a choice.

We are who we chose to be. Who do you want to be? The sooner you decide who you are going to be, it will be easier for you to figure out how and what you are going to do to become that person. Once you set a destination, the path will appear right before your eyes, just decide where you want to go.

4. Have a purpose.

When you have a purpose that lifts you up and inspires you, getting out of bed will be that much easier. Instead of feeling like you are constantly pushing, you will feel like you are being pulled by an enormous source of energy and power. Wherever you are in life right now, finding your life purpose will give your life meaning, which will increase your drive and determination to succeed.

5. Be great.

“Greatness is not this wonderful, esoteric, elusive, god-like feature that only the special among us will ever taste – you know it’s something that truly exists in all of us. It’s very simple, this is what I believe and I’m willing to die for it. Period. It’s that simple. And that’s all I need to know, so from there you do what you need to do.” Will Smith

6. Commit.

If you don’t commit, you will never discover the success and greatness that awaits you. Commitment is what sets the people who succeed apart from those who don’t. An unwavering commitment is going to pull you through the rough and hard times that you will face on your journey. Don’t give up. Keep going, and above all else, COMMIT.

7. Don’t be outworked.

Will Smith said it best.

“The only thing that I see that is distinctly different about me is I’m not afraid to die on a treadmill. I will not be out-worked, period. You might have more talent than me, you might be smarter than me, you might be sexier than me, you might be all of those things you got it on me in nine categories. But if we get on the treadmill together, there’s two things: You’re getting off first, or I’m going to die. It’s really that simple, right?

You’re not going to out-work me. It’s such a simple, basic concept. The guy who is willing to hustle the most is going to be the guy that just gets that loose ball. The majority of people who aren’t getting the places they want or aren’t achieving the things that they want in this business is strictly based on hustle. It’s strictly based on being out-worked; it’s strictly based on missing crucial opportunities. I say all the time if you stay ready, you ain’t gotta get ready.”

8. Work on your skills.

Many people are given a pretty picture of successful people, entrepreneurship, and athletes. We all see the outcome, the flashy cars, massive houses, and luxury vacations. How often do we consider what it took to get there? It’s easy to look at these people and conclude that they didn’t work as hard as we are working to achieve our goals. Instead of focusing on what they have, or the outcome that you see, think about how much time and effort they have invested to get where they are today.

“The separation of talent and skill is one of the greatest misunderstood concepts for people who are trying to excel, who have dreams, who want to do things. Talent you have naturally. Skill is only developed by hours and hours and hours of beating on your craft.” Will Smith

9. Let fear motivate you.

Fear can be used to learn, take action, and develop a growth mindset. If you want to learn more about how you can use fear to your advantage, you might like 5 Ways to Use Fear to Your Advantage.

10. Be amazing at what you do.

If you have the desire to be the best you can be, then the first thing you can do is START. We all start somewhere, so right where you are is a good place to start. Be amazing, and do great things!

“The starting point of all achievement is desire.” Napoleon Hill

I think having purpose is the most important thing for motivation. Before I have really hard time to get out of the bed but after I had purpose I literally jump.
Will Smith definitely made really good points.

The two things that resonate with me are ‘have a purpose’ and ‘don’t be outworked.’

Having a purpose allows us to find will power and motivation and whats great is the more passionate we are about it and the more we work on it, the easier it is to do.

Love the ‘don’t be outworked.’ We only get what we put in. Its a great read when your procrastinating and struggling for motivation. It makes you think if I start working and stop doing nothing right now ill be one step closer to my goals!

Would love to see a post about how to build a solid work-ethic 🙂

It’s a lot easier to wake up in the morning and work when you are passionate about what you are doing!

Thanks for the article suggestion!! You will see a post about how to build a solid work-ethic soon 🙂

All the best to you Kourtney! Brandon.

Hello here. I like Will Smith as actor. I hope that his personality has resemblance with his characters in movies.
For me 8 and 10 thoughts are similar. Anyway, it has deep meaning. One thing I know that we need to take action not just once but constantly, every day.
Thoughts from famous people inspire us but sometimes we forget that we need to do something about it.
All people who are successful worked on their skills and improved traits of character.
    Thanks for the inspiring read.
    All the best, Nemira.

I personally think based on life experience 6 and 7 are the hardest to do by far. Committing up front is realatively easy, but actually following through and not getting outworked is incredibly hard. Motivation to keep at something for an extended period of time is wildly difficult, especially in the kind of culture we have in America where everything must be achieved in seconds or minutes.

Thanks for sharing this, this explains a lot of Will Smith’s success and hopefully I can translate some of it into my own.

    • May 22, 2017 at 8:33 pm

Following through can be difficult, but if you are able to do this, you will achieve your goals. Also, especially in this time we live in, I think patience is very important. Most things that bring a lot of value to our lives and others take time. Thanks for sharing your opinion Craig. All the best to you in your pursuit for success! Brandon.

    Hey Brandon,

Great post! I love Will Smith. really inspiring guy. Evan has some amazing people on his youtube channel with their top 10’s. David Bowie I really enjoyed as well as Dan Pena who is really out there!

Don’t be out worked. Love that he is prepared to die on the treadmill! I am trying my best to make that a habit of mine too. It really inspires me. Keep up the great posts my man 🙂

#1 does resonate with me. I’ve read so many articles giving advice not to discuss my blogging career with anyone (unless I prove them with results). But I chose otherwise and discussed with my friends, relatives and neighbors. The worst decision I ever made. Now I’m feeling the pressure and couldn’t focus on my goals. Although I pretend not to hear other’s opinion, I can’t. Their negative opinions drive away my confidence. And I need article like this to stay motivated and focus on my goals.

#9 is an interesting rule. I never knew fear could motivate me. I need to figure out more on that. Thanks for sharing, Brandon.

Great post on one of the more inspirational actors of recent times.

All ten quotes make complete sense and I have actually watched some of Wills motivational videos on Youtube which are very inspiring.

Number 2 is one I draw a lot of inspiration from.

I look forward to some of your future posts.
